an innocent guide to Copenhagen

The Kyoto Protocol was the first legally enforceable international treaty to reduce emissions. It was signed by 141 countries, came into force in 2005 and will expire in 2012. This December (7th - 18th), heads of government and business leaders from across the world will meet up in Copenhagen to set new targets for the next stage of the Kyoto Protocol and secure financial commitments to tackle climate change internationally.

Here are a few things to remember when meeting the Secretary of State. Do say hello, employ a firm handshake and wear your smartest trousers. Don't curtsey or eat all the good biscuits. Now we've set the pre interview scene, why not watch our Jess asking Ed Miliband your questions right here.

The climate talks are in their final stages now and Gordon has gone to join the fray, as hopefully these remaining days will signify a binding agreement. It's an almighty challenge though, bringing together representatives from such a large and diverse set of nations. Feeling a bit confused by the debate, or a little out of touch? We were too until we discovered this extremely clever widget which allows you to monitor the current state of the treaty and what that would mean for planet earth, real-time. It was developed in the US with the help of those clever chaps at MIT and it shows how far they've come already as well as where they need to get to in Copenhagen. We really hope they crack it.

No matter what the final treaty is though, we are all going to have to adapt the way we live if we are to meet any of the proposed targets. Take a look at the links below so you can start to imagine your role in achieving our fresh, new, lower-carbon world.

So what should your target be? Two figures being discussed at Copenhagen are a 25% or 40% reduction of emissions against 1990 by 2020

  • To reduce emissions by 25% - your 2020 footprint needs to be 7.5 tonnes per annum
  • To reduce emissions by 40% - your 2020 footprint needs to be 6 tonnes per annum
Tough targets, but easily achievable by cutting out 1 or 2 long haul flights, popping in some roof insulation and spending a little less time in the car. For more tips see www.actonCO2.org.uk
